THE WOODBINE HOTEL 1904
The Woodbine Hotel was built in 1904 by Russian immigrant Jews, Jake and Sarah
Shapira, after their boarding house on the same site burned. During construction, Jake
stepped on a nail, got tetanus and died that same year leaving Sarah and her son to finish
and operate the hotel which they did until 1928. The hotel was then sold to Clara Wills,
who along with her daughter Tommy, operated and lived at the property until 1978 when
it was purchased by Randy Parten, a local businessman and rancher who did extensive
renovations on the property and registered it as a National and Texas Historic Landmark.
The hotel was donated to The Woodbine Foundation in 1997 and is now operated as a
nonprofit organization dedicated to Charitable, Educational and Religious organizations.
